Scaling and Root‑Planing

龈下刮治及根面平整

Subgingival scaling removes subgingival calculus and plaque deposits attached to the root-surface within periodontal pockets using specialized periodontal instruments.

Root-planing is the procedure that eliminates calculus embedded within the cementum, and removes toxin-contaminated diseased cementum from the root. This creates a smooth, firm and clean root surface with good biocompatibility, which favours reattachment and regeneration of periodontal tissues.

Scaling and root-planing is the fundamental non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. It is often performed together with supragingival scaling (tooth cleaning) for better therapeutic outcomes, as supragingival cleaning removes calculus and plaque above the gum-line.

If deep periodontal pockets do not respond well to non-surgical therapy, flap surgery may be considered. The gum tissue is reflected to allow direct vision for thorough debridement.

Local anaesthesia may be administered during deep subgingival treatment for patient comfort. Minor bleeding shortly after the procedure is normal.
